Why you will love this recipe

Snacks and appetizers often steal the show at gatherings. This spinach dip is one of our go-to crowd-pleasers: creamy, flavorful and easy to prepare. It’s the kind of dip friends ask for seconds of—great with soft bread, pita chips or crackers while watching a game or enjoying a casual get-together.

Here’s why this recipe stands out:

  • Rich, creamy and cheesy. Spoon it straight from the bowl or serve as a dip for bread and croutons — it’s hard to resist.
  • Fast and no-bake. Ready in about 10–15 minutes, it’s perfect when you don’t want to use the oven.
  • Simple ingredients. Only seven basic pantry items are needed to make a generous bowl.
  • Healthy and protein-rich. At roughly 85 calories per serving, it’s suitable for weight-conscious and keto-friendly menus.

Ingredients & substitutes

This easy spinach dip relies on fresh spinach, cottage cheese and a few seasonings. Below are the main ingredients and suitable swaps. Exact measurements appear in the recipe card further down.

  • Fresh spinach. I prefer fresh for flavor and texture, but thawed frozen spinach works fine—just drain thoroughly.
  • Cottage cheese. Whipped cottage cheese replaces cream cheese or sour cream and boosts protein. Use 4% small curd for richness, or low-fat cottage cheese if you prefer. You can substitute with full-fat plain Greek yogurt or softened cream cheese.
  • Mayonnaise. Two tablespoons add extra creaminess. If you’d rather not use mayo, replace it with additional cottage cheese or cream cheese.
  • Seasonings. Salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder provide classic dip flavor without needing a packaged mix.

How to make spinach dip

Step 1 – Prepare the spinach. Steam, sauté or briefly cook the spinach. Let it cool, then squeeze out all excess liquid and chop finely. If using frozen spinach, thaw, drain and squeeze out water.

Step 2 – Make the creamy base. In a blender or food processor, combine the cottage cheese, mayonnaise, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Blend on high until smooth. Taste and adjust seasonings.

Step 3 – Combine and serve. Transfer the cream to a bowl, fold in the chopped spinach, and stir until evenly combined. Serve immediately with bread, crackers or crudités, or chill before serving.

Make ahead & Storage

This dip can be made ahead and keeps well when refrigerated. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days. Keep chilled to preserve texture and flavor, and give the dip a good stir before serving to restore creaminess.

Recipe tips

  • Fresh spinach gives the best flavor, but frozen works when drained well.
  • Wring cooked spinach thoroughly to prevent a watery dip. Use a towel, colander, or squeeze by hand.
  • Whipped cottage cheese provides a smooth texture and extra protein. If you dislike the cottage cheese flavor, swap in softened cream cheese.
  • Because cottage cheese can be salty, taste the blended base before adding more salt.

What to eat with spinach dip?

This versatile dip pairs well with pita, crackers, croutons, soft bread, and tortilla chips. It’s also delicious with vegetable sticks like carrots, celery and cucumber — a light, satisfying option for snacking or a party platter.

How to squeeze spinach for dip?

After cooking or thawing, let the spinach cool, then place it in a clean towel or colander and press or wring out as much water as possible. Removing the moisture ensures a thick, creamy dip.

Can I freeze spinach dip?

Freezing is not recommended. The dairy in this dip can separate and become watery after thawing. It’s best made fresh and stored in the refrigerator for a few days.

Do you eat spinach dip hot or cold?

This recipe is intended to be served cold. Heating can change the texture and cause the cottage cheese to separate, so chill the dip before serving for the best creamy consistency.
