Read on for ideas to transform a builder-grade laundry room into a French country–inspired space using a DIY makeover plan.
A family of five creates a lot of laundry—no surprise that I’ve spent countless hours in our laundry room.
Shortly after we moved in, we painted the walls a cheerful blue and added inexpensive laminate cabinets above the washer and dryer to store detergent and supplies. It worked—functional and practical—and I appreciate that the laundry room is on the second floor right next to the master bedroom.

Over the years I’ve been craving an update that better suits the style I’ve grown to love: natural, neutral tones with traditional, Southern, and French country influences. To help visualize the changes, I created a French country–inspired laundry room mood board.

Laundry Room DIY Makeover Inspiration Items
Here’s the plan for the transformation, broken into building, installation, and painting projects to make the room feel cohesive and intentional.
One of the first changes will be replacing the existing door with a French door to bring more light into the hallway and add architectural interest.

Building Projects
For the window, cloth curtains aren’t practical because the room gathers lint and dust. Instead I’ll build a wood valance from trim and crown molding to give the window more presence without frequent laundering.

We need drying space for air-dry items. The current accordion rack works but looks worn, so I plan to build a custom beadboard-style drying rack that complements the room’s French country feel.

Above the washer and dryer I’ll add a stained wood floating shelf for decorative items and practical storage. I’ll match the stain to the new flooring for a cohesive look.

Because the litter box must stay in the laundry room, I plan to conceal it in a beadboard-style enclosure to keep the space looking tidy and consistent with the design.

Installation Projects
I’ll replace the fluorescent overhead fixture with a woven seagrass drum-style light to add texture and warmth to the ceiling.

Flooring is a big update: the builder’s original linoleum feels dated. I’ll install luxury vinyl plank with a distressed wood look to add rustic charm, durability, and easy maintenance—perfect for a busy laundry room.

On the long wall opposite the washer and dryer, I’m considering removable wallpaper with a subtle olive branch pattern to introduce visual interest without long-term commitment. Modern removable papers make updates simple and reversible.

Painting Projects
The paint palette will brighten the room while adding contrast in key areas. I’ll paint walls and ceiling a warm white to reflect light and make the space feel fresh.

Trim, the drying rack, and the valance will be a crisp white to keep the look clean. The French door will be painted a deep charcoal to coordinate with hardware and the wallpaper’s darker tones. The laminate cabinets will be transformed with a deep green to make them a focal point and add a touch of French country character.
Below is the mood board showing how the elements come together, blending neutral textures, rustic wood tones, and classic finishes for a cohesive French country laundry room.

This is the first project I’m tackling this year and I can’t wait to get started. I’ll share step-by-step details, photos, and lessons learned as the makeover progresses so you can follow along and try ideas in your own home.
