Breakfasts during Veganuary in our house often take the form of a creamy, spoonable smoothie-porridge hybrid we call “Smorridge” — essentially an oaty smoothie bowl. It combines the staying power and health benefits of porridge with the convenience and speed of a smoothie, which is perfect for mornings when you don’t have time for stirring and waiting.
While green smoothies are nutritious, they don’t always keep me full until lunchtime. Smorridge delivers both substance and flavor: it’s more satisfying than a bowl of sugary cereal and provides a protein-packed, energy-sustaining start to the day.
Another bonus is the fun of decorating smoothie bowls. A pale, creamy base makes a perfect canvas for arranging fruit, seeds, nuts, powdered berries or even a few dark chocolate shavings into an attractive, appetizing topping.
A decent high-speed blender is important when you’re blending oats (and tougher ingredients like stalky kale or seedy berries). A powerful blender yields a silky, non-grainy texture — less powerful blenders or hand blenders may leave the mixture a bit coarse.
