DIY Ranch Dressing Mix Recipe: Make & Store Homemade Seasoning Mix

Ranch dressing inspires strong opinions: some people enjoy it as a light salad topper, others love it so much they’d dunk anything in it, and a few actively dislike it. If you’re in the last group, this piece may not be for you. For everyone else, there’s good news: homemade ranch mix is easy, economical, and far superior to most bottled varieties.

Packaged ranch mixes can be expensive for what they are—mostly salt and powdered seasonings. Making your own mix lets you control the ingredients, adjust flavors to your liking, and keep a ready stash in the pantry. One batch makes enough mix to season salads, wings, sandwiches, or anything else you like to pair with ranch.

To assemble the mix, grab a clean mason jar and layer dried parsley, black pepper, garlic salt, kosher salt, granulated garlic, granulated onion, and dill weed. Layering the herbs and spices is optional but makes for an attractive jar. Once everything is in the jar, secure the lid and shake to blend the seasonings evenly. Store the mix in a cool, dry place.

When you’re ready to make ranch dressing, whisk together 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon of the mix with 1 cup mayonnaise, 1 cup milk, 3/4 cup sour cream, and 2 tablespoons lemon juice. Stir until smooth and adjust seasoning or texture as needed. For a thicker ranch, add sour cream; for thinner, add a splash more milk.

This homemade mix can be used interchangeably with any recipe that calls for a packet of ranch seasoning—use 1 tablespoon of homemade mix for each packet required. It’s ideal for salads, dips, marinades, and recipes like slow-cooker cilantro ranch chicken tacos or a chopped BBQ chicken salad.
