6 Delicious Easter Treat Recipes for Spring Celebrations

With Easter fast approaching, I’m starting to think about healthy Easter treats.

I love Easter and the promise of spring, but the abundance of chocolate can be a challenge. Every year I try to avoid the sugar highs (and lows), but it isn’t always easy. The children receive multiple chocolate eggs, and I always wrestle with whether to let them enjoy them all at once or ration them out over weeks.

This year the kids gave up sugar for a few weeks leading up to Easter. It proved to be a useful exercise, showing them they are capable of resisting temptation. I’ve been so proud when they emerged from school holding a sweet or a piece of chocolate and didn’t immediately eat it. Their willpower has been impressive.

Still, once Easter arrives the sugar feasting usually begins.

Last year Emma from Free From Farmhouse published a helpful list of 35 non-food Easter treats. Those options work well for children with allergies or intolerances and help reduce the overall sugar load, while providing gifts that last beyond the holiday.

This year I’ll include a non-food gift for the children, and I’ll also make some healthier Easter treats.

Over the years I’ve developed a range of Easter recipes, most with less sugar than traditional versions. These healthier alternatives are great to serve instead of shop-bought sweets, and no one will feel deprived.

6 Favourite Healthy Easter Treats

Wholesome Easter Biscuits. These biscuits are crisp and lightly sweetened with a touch of rice syrup. I make them using my wholegrain, rice-free, gluten-free flour blend, adding extra fibre and nutrients to the bake.

Easter Tea Loaf. I developed this loaf while experimenting with milk kefir. Milk kefir is a natural probiotic that supports gut and immune health; its yeast helps the loaf rise. The result is a wholesome Easter loaf sweetened modestly with honey and dried fruit for natural sweetness.

Hot Cross Bun Chocolate Rolls. One of my favourites, these rolls are similar to cinnamon buns but adapted for Easter with a dark chocolate filling. They’re made with my wholegrain rice-free, gluten-free flour blend, which provides added nutrition.

Healthy Homemade Chocolate & Easter Eggs. Making your own chocolate is a fantastic way to avoid the high sugar content of many store-bought eggs. Try moulding dark chocolate and filling it with a strawberry cashew cream for a delicious, lower-sugar treat.

Hot Cross Buns. This version uses rice syrup for sweetness and swaps dried fruit for dark chocolate chunks to lower the fructose content, making it ideal for those who prefer less fruit in their buns.

Raw Chocolate Truffles. These truffles, created by ‘Roo’ for the holidays, are equally suited to Easter. Made from dried fruits and nuts and coated with a little dark (sugar-free) chocolate, they’re rich, satisfying, and naturally sweet.
